OFFENSE

After a long career as an assistant at Hilldale, Phil McWilliams will head west for his first venture as a head football coach as he takes over the Haskell program. He inherits a group that was young last year and took their lumps but come back this year with enthusiasm and a valuable year of experience behind them. The offense will be led by quarterback Brannon Westmoreland (6-3, 173, Jr.) who threw for 448 yards and a pair of touchdowns in six games in his sophomore debut under center. “Brannon is tall and athletic (plays basketball and baseball as well) and has a strong and accurate arm,” said McWilliams. “He’s starting to become a good leader of the team and is taking control of the offense. He has a huge upside and can put up some big numbers with the talented athletes around him.” One of those talented athletes is wide receiver Fernando Gonzalez (5-11, 157, Sr.) who hauled in 16 balls last year and had two touchdowns. Also in the receiving corps is Lane Mann (6-2, 162, Jr.) who is big target and had six receptions for 60 yards last year. They’ll also be some experience in the offensive line with the return of Jon Michael McClain (6-3, 243, Jr.) and Junior Faul (6-1, 205, Jr.) who gets high marks from McWilliams for his work ethic and his potential as a team leader. The Haymakers will look to sophomore tailback Isaiah Timmreck (6-0, 180) to be the main ball carrier. “He has the potential to be a guy who can carry the ball 20+ times a game and has good speed in the open field,” said the new Haymaker boss who will utilize a spread offense with multiple formations.

DEFENSE

McWilliams will maintain the 3-4 defensive scheme that the Haymakers have been running, so there won’t be a lot to deal with on that side of the ball. Although several of the names mentioned on offense will also see action on defense, McWilliams has the luxury of a handful of players that are defense only that saw playing time last season. Among them are Jason Mendoza (5-5, 155, Sr.) at inside linebacker where he had 28 tackles last season, DeShawn and Marcus Clark (6-1, 170, Sr.) who combined for nearly forty tackles from the safety spots and J.D. Powell (5-8, 140, Sr.) who is also part of the linebacking crew. “This is a talented and hard-working group of kids who have a chance to be very competitive this season,” said McWilliams.
