OFFENSE

The Sperry Pirates will return seven starters on both sides of the football in 2021 and have the same mindset they have had for years. “The goal is the same, get better every week and make a run in the playoffs,” head coach Robert Park said. Coming in for his 33rd season at Sperry, coach Park has confidence in this year’s team. Running a spread offensive formation with a dual threat QB system, the Pirates will turn to quarterback Carson Hendrix (6-2, 175, Sr.) to help lead the offense. Hendrix had over 2,000 yards of offense last year, along with 24 touchdowns. The Pirates return two receivers from last season, Stanley Revas (5-9, 160, Jr.) and Luke Barnes (6-2, 160, Sr.). Expect these two to get a lot more touches in 2021. The offense also brings back running back Brady Benham (5-9, 155, So.) who comes back after playing substantial minutes as a freshman, recording five touchdowns, and averaging 6.4 yards per carry.

DEFENSE

Bringing back seven starters from last year’s team, the defense looks to use utilize three players that have the ability to impress a lot of people. Nic Ball (5-9, 155, Sr.), Walker McCause (5-11, Jr.), and Eric Gonzalez (5-9, 220, Sr.) all look to return after starting a season ago and producing impressive numbers. With 81 tackles, four sacks, and an interception, Ball will line back up at linebacker. Next to him at outside linebacker is McCause who recorded 56 tackles and three sacks. And at defensive end is Gonzalez, who recorded 47 tackles. Expect to see the defense led by these three players. The defense will run a 3-4 formation with the philosophy to play fundamentally sound and making sure to get to the football.
