Union’s Jesse Tandoy – athlete spotlight presented by excel therapy

By Derrick Smith

Jesse Tandoy enjoys playing the game of golf. He is a member of the Union golf and basketball teams and says that in order to become the golfer he is today, he has had to invest a lot of work and time but he knows that it will all pay off because it already has started to.

“There has been a lot of dedication, determination, attitude, and practice in order to get where I am,” he said. “I have set goals for myself and that is what motivates me to be the best that I can be. I won two tournaments as an individual during my freshman year and that was definitely something that gave me more confidence to keep working hard.”

Throughout his life, Tandoy has had a few people that have served as role models for him.

“The biggest influences on my life have been my dad and professional boxer Manny Pacquaio,” Jesse stated. “They are both good role models for me because they work as hard as they can and they will do whatever it takes to be the best version of themselves that they can be. When I am on social media, I enjoy following Phil Mickelson. He’s my favorite golfer and he posts some really great stuff.”

When he is on the court or course, Jesse says that there are a few people that he enjoys going up against for different reasons.

“When we are practicing as a team, I like to battle with Sammy Bonaobra,” he said. “He is a very good competitor and he always brings his best when he competes. When we are not in an actual competition, I enjoy playing against my brother and beating him. He thinks he is better than me but I have to show him otherwise.”

Union golf coach, Tanner Bushyhead, says that Tandoy will be a key player this season for Union.

“He will be our rock this season and is looking to build on his freshman year,” the coach said. “Jesse made state last year as an individual and this year we are leaning on him to help get our team to state. He is a great kid who has all the golf tools to be one of the best players in the state.”
