JJ TAPPANA

5-6

OFFENSE

The Comets made an early first-round playoff exit last season after a regular season that saw them end at 5-5. As they enter the 2022 season, head coach JJ Tappana, who is in his seventeenth season leading the Comets, says that this year’s squad brings some excitement to the season. “We played a lot of young guys last year,” Tappana said. “That should be beneficial for us this season. This group really seems to enjoy each other and loves playing the game. We have to fill some holes on the offensive line that were left from graduation, but we are really looking forward to a great season.” The Comets will look to establish a ground game with running back Austin Munson (6-0, 195, Sr.). For the past two years, Munson has filled in behind starters but is now going to get his chance to shine and show what he can do. While they want to get the running game going, Bishop Kelley has a lot of talent at the receiver position as well. Wide receivers Nic Leslie (6-1, 180, Sr.) and Sawyer McGraw (5-10, 175, Sr.) will both be threats on the outside and have the opportunity to make big plays. Sam Rhoades (6-4, 240, Jr.) will play tight end and Luke Lazenby (6-2, 210, Jr.) will switch between halfback and tight end. Both will look to make plays for the offense. Leading things with the offensive line will be Austin Hieger (6-3, 265, Sr.).

DEFENSE

On the defensive side of the ball, the Comets will be an even front but can change to different looks whenever necessary. They want to stop the run first and be sound in the secondary, and they will bring pressure on most plays. Cornerback Max Priest (5-8, 165, Sr.) will work to shut down the opponent’s passing game. Rhett Myers (5-11, 190, Sr.) and Braden Goodwin (5-10, 175, Sr.) will maintain the linebacker position this season after a solid season a year ago. They have both worked hard in teh offseason to get stronger both physically and mentally. Working to cause problems upfront will be defensive linemen Reid Jones (6-3, 250, Jr.) and Ryan Boos (6-0, 220, Jr.). Whether they are stopping the run or trying to get to the quarterback, Jones and Boos will be a key part of the Comet defense. Assistant coaches this season will be Justin Robinson, Trevor Parks, Matt Andrews, Eric Roepke, Chris Messner, and Zac Washington.
