Oklahoma National Guard Spotlight -Jayce Hightower – Presented by OK National Guard

Like many who join the military, Jayce Hightower of Sapulpa knew at a young age that he wanted to serve. It wasn’t until high school when he finally realized the opportunity was real and he made the commitment to serve his county, state, and community.

“As a younger kid I always liked the idea of joining the service, but junior year of high school I definitely decided to join,” said Hightower.

Entering the recruiting process can make some new recruits nervous, but Hightower was excited and thought the process was an easy one.

“The recruiting process was easy. Just took a ASVAB test (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Test), they had me sign some papers, and then I was in,” said Hightower.

As a student at Sapulpa High School, Hightower is involved in the marching band, concert, and jazz band as a percussionist. His job with the Oklahoma National Guard is serving as an 11B or Infantryman. Hightower is currently awaiting his duty assignment with a unit in Oklahoma.

One of the first questions he gets from friends and family is almost always about basic training.

“Basic Training was difficult, but some parts were very fun. You learn a lot and it is very rewarding,” said Hightower.

Currently, Hightower is enrolled at Tulsa Community College where he can use one of his benefits with the National Guard, which includes free tuition, and fees.

He offers this advice to anyone looking to join the Armed Forces.

“If it’s really what you want to do, then do it. It’s easy to join, but hard to follow through. Just make sure it’s what you really want to do,” said Hightower.
