Rejoice Christian’s Sarah Willis – Coach Spotlight – Presented by Shields Keller Williams Owasso

By Derrick Smith

Sarah Willis is in her first season as the head coach of the Rejoice Christian volleyball team. And while she is new to leading the program, she is no stranger at all and knows the program well.

“I have been involved with the Rejoice volleyball team for seven years,” she said. “I have been the assistant coach for six of those years, and this is my first year as head coach. I’ve also coached club volleyball for two years, coached at Memorial for one and was a grad assistant at Evangel University.”

Stepping in to take over a program that she is familiar with gives Willis a head start as the top coach. She knows what makes the program work and the players know her.

“Watching the Rejoice Volleyball program become what it is today and still getting stronger each year is great,” Willis said. “Knowing how far we have come in the past seven years and seeing how many players have grown into amazing athletes is probably one of the most rewarding parts of my job. Watching my two seniors this year really take on that leadership role and welcoming our younger players with open arms and truly loving them despite their age or ability. Isn’t that what sports are all about? Trusting each other and becoming a team and hopefully building relationships that will last a lifetime.”

Making the decision to enter the coaching profession was made easier for Sarah because of those that had an impact on her life when she was younger.

“Coach Nick Ditolla was my High School volleyball coach and he was a very knowledgeable man when it comes to volleyball,” she said. “He taught me alot during my years at Jenks. I also played for Gary Matthews for club volleyball and he also had a great influence on my game. I have been blessed by many coaches during my career and I too hope to be a blessing to my players.”

When she is not coaching or running a practice for her team, Willis enjoys spending time with her family, which usually includes sports.

“My husband and I have four kids who are active in all things sports,” Sarah said. “My husband is also a football and baseball coach. So during my spare time we are usually at either a football or baseball field.”
