Erica Becerra – SNU Exercise Science Spotlight

Former fitness instructor Erica Becerra knew she would one day complete her master’s degree but determining when and where was the questions. As a mom, she wanted to school that would fit her schedule and lifestyle. She found that in Southern Nazarene University.

“I am currently a stay-at-home mom and also do some contract work as a fitness instructor for Paycom in Oklahoma City,” said Becerra. “As a mom, I needed something that would allow me to still be able to take care of my son while pursuing my degree. When I found out that SNU had a program that was only one night a week, I knew it was going to work for me and my family.”

Entering the program at SNU was the first step, once class started Becerra said she enjoys the learning process and was excited to be back in school.

“I graduated with my undergrad back in 2007, so I had a big break from school. I truly love learning so I can’t say how much I’ve enjoyed being back in the classroom with other like-minded classmates,” said Becerra. “I was pleasantly surprised by the caliber of the faculty and curriculum offered. Coming from a larger university from my undergrad, I wasn’t sure what to expect at a smaller private university, but it has been so much better than I could have imagined.”

Working in the field of exercise science, Becerra said this degree will help further her career as a professional.

“I plan to become a Clinical Exercise Physiologist after graduation. My ultimate goal is to become a Certified Diabetes Educator. This degree is the perfect avenue to be able to pursue these professional goals,” said Becerra.

Becerra said anyone looking to further their education and open new doors of opportunity should look at SNU’s master’s degree programs for adults.

“If you are looking for a smaller, more personalized option for higher education this is the place for you. This is the perfect fit for someone with a family or a full-time job. It isn’t easy, but it is possible. Take the chance on yourself. You’re worth it,” said Becerra.
