SPERRY PIRATES
ROBERT PARK
6-5
OFFENSE
Heading into his 34th season with the Sperry Pirates and 23rd as head coach, Robert Park returns four starters on offense this season and is excited for the opportunity to see how his young players take advantage of new opportunities. The Pirates will be based out of a multiple formation spread offense. Although they will be lined up in shotgun sets, they want to establish a solid running game, looking for ways to open up the passing attack and spread the field. Brady Benhan (5-9, 170, Jr.) will lead the way under center for the Pirates. Benham is a tremendous competitor who can make plays at every aspect of the game. He is also a two-time state champion in wrestling and tremendous baseball player for the Pirates in the spring. Expect for Benhan to distribute the ball around early in the season looking to establish connections with playmakers that continue to grow throughout the year.
DEFENSE
In 2022 the Sperry Pirates are switching their defensive scheme from previous years to better align with their current roster. Only returning three starters from 2021, the Pirates have limited depth up front, and will look to shut down opposing offenses using an odd stack scheme which allows them to have more playmakers on the field swarming to the ball. Chase Woodall (5-10, 180, Sr.) will be looked at to provide leadership and a veteran presence on defense. From his defensive end position, the Pirates will rely on Woodall to have an impactful year this season, his ability to bring pressure on the quarterback and contain the edge will be vital to the Pirates’ success on defense. Dylan Abbott (So.) is a two-sport athlete that has emerged as a young talent from his spot at linebacker. Coach Park expects Abbott to follow up an impressive freshman year with an even better sophomore campaign. Other players to look for include Jett Booth (So.), who saw some time as a freshman and displayed great instincts, and Anthony Scavo (Jr.).
