Mikena Stephens plays third base, second base, and in the outfield for the Lady Sandites softball team. For Stephens, a sophomore at Sand Springs, there are many ways to make a meaningful impact on others’ lives on and off the field. While Stephens has made many great memories in her time at Sand Springs on the diamond, she also enjoys spending time volunteering and tutoring.
On the diamond Stephens gets to showcase many of her positive characteristics.
“I think attitude, effort, and a strong mental game make someone a great softball player or athlete,” Stephens said.
Stephens has already created some great memories with her teammates at Sand Springs. She recalled a time from her freshman season.
“My favorite memory was last season when we had a double header against Putnam City North and won both games,” Stephens said. “On the way back we all sang along to songs.”
Looking ahead to this season Stepehns is thinking about how the team can improve as a cohesive unit.
“Our goal is to be the best we can be and play more aggressively,” Stephens said.
Off the field Stephens is very active in volunteering, being a peer tutor, and assisting with the Special Olympics.
“Being a peer tutor and being around MPH with my sister when I was younger was such a fun experience for me to have,” Stephens said. “I continue to surround myself with the special education program at Sand Springs. My advice to everyone who has thought about surrounding themselves with the program is: ‘Do it!’ You’ll have so much fun and make a bunch of friends.”
After high school Stephens plans to go to college where she hopes to continue playing softball and wants to work toward becoming a nurse. She looks up to her mom and often seeks her out for advice or inspiration.
“She has shown me that with hard work and dedication you can do anything you put your mind to.”
