Owasso High School’s Lance Ramsey comes from family with a deep tradition of military service. Ramsey joined the Oklahoma Army National Guard to serve his country and to receive the education benefits.
“My family has a long line of military service, but I chose the guard for two reasons. One being we aren’t in that many conflicts and I wouldn’t want to be stationed somewhere with no fighting and two being I want to get my education in as soon as possible,” said Ramsey.
As a member of the National Guard, Ramsey will serve as a Joint Fire Support Specialist, which gather intelligence for the U.S. Army and its artillery teams. His job could include completing tasks such as establishing communication systems and encoding and decoding messages. For Ramsey, it’s a great opportunity to make his own contribution to the freedoms we all hold dear.
“I have relatives who fought back in the Civil War and up till now,” said Ramsey. “I like the feeling of doing something great.”
Ramsey admits the recruiting process was smooth and quick. Once he returns from basic training and AIT (Advanced Individual Training), Ramsey plans to use his educational benefits to enroll into college and pursue a degree. In his free time, Ramsey said he enjoys hunting and fishing.
