Metro Christian’s Wyatt Powell is a junior on the basketball squad, where he will start for the Patriots this season at the shooting guard position. Powell is joined by three other starters as the Patriots look to improve off a 13-13 season in Class 3A in which Metro Christian was knocked out at the regional tournament.
Coach Bryon Flam is excited about Powell, who is one of the team’s better shooters but can also attack the rim. As a sophomore, Powell averaged nine points and four rebounds last season.
“Wyatt is a multi-skilled athlete on the basketball court,” Flam said. “He is quick and can attack the rim. He is great in transition and can jump high for his height. He’s worked extremely hard on his shot, and it has paid off. He is shooting the ball well right now.”
In his most recent summer league game, Powell finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Flam has noticed Powell play a lot more comfortably this offseason and expects him to have a great year.
“Wyatt also makes everyone around him better,” Flam said. “It doesn’t matter who is on his team when we scrimmage, they are going to win. He is also a great passer and understands when he is doubled, and someone is open. He is very unselfish and just wants to win.”
Outside of basketball, Powell is involved in FCA and Spanish club. Powell also attends KLIFE each Sunday with a group of friends and students from Tulsa University. Upon graduation, Powell wants to continue playing basketball at the collegiate level.
“Wyatt is one of the most hard-working kids I’ve been around,” Flom said. “He loves basketball and wants to be the best player he can be. He is a quiet leader, and I can’t wait to see how he does over the next two years. He has a chance to be a special player.”
