Booker T Washington Hornets Girls Basketball Preview – Presented by Philip Brissey Shelter Insurance

Coach: Rabu Leyva

21-22 Record: 11-12

The Lady Hornets of Booker T Washington High School are entering a new basketball season with experience and excitement. Sixth-year head coach, Rabu Leyva says that they have high expectations for the team this season. “We return six of our top nine players from last season,” Leyva said. “A lot of those players received a lot of varsity experience. We have a strong incoming class of freshmen, and we look to compete at a high level this season and earn a birth to the state tournament.”

Leading the team this season will be Marcayla Johnson (6-0, So.). She is a top 25 nationally ranked basketball player who has committed to Baylor. As a freshman last year, she had two game-winners while leading her team in rebounds and second in scoring.

Rhyian Mayberry (5-7, So.) is a young athlete who has worked hard to improve her game. She is a constant talker and encourages her teammates on and off the court and she will do what is needed to win. Playing guard this season, Alexis Leyva (5-10, Fr.) is an incoming freshman that is looking to have a big season. She already has an offer from Oral Roberts University. She will defend, run the floor, and help create opportunities for others.

Another freshman that will look to make an impact is Kyliin Johnson (5-5, Fr.). She plays bigger than she is on both ends of the floor. She will attack the rim with reckless abandon and is not afraid to guard players bigger than her. She has a toughness that rubs off on her teammates. Tierra Owens (5-5, So.) brings a lot of speed to the floor. Her effort is unmatched when going for loose balls and she is an outstanding part of this team. With all-around skills and senior leadership, Makena Sweet (5-7, Sr.) is an asset for the Lady Hornets. Bailey Braxton (6-3, So.) is a formidable presence in the post. Other Lady Hornets to keep an eye out for this season are Whitney Smith (5-6, Fr.), Leah Brooks (5-8, Jr.), Lauren Brooks (5-7, Jr.), and Railyn Watkins (5-3, Jr.).
