The Sapulpa girls soccer team has been on fire this season, but junior forward Alex Terrones might say that’s not necessarily a good thing–at least, for the fire.
When she graduates early from SHS this year, she’s planning to become a Sapulpa firefighter.
“I have wanted to become a firefighter for almost a year and a half,” Terrones said. “I am really into fitness and being able to help others.”
Terrones attended a few firefighting camps and got to witness first-hand what it takes to be a firefighter.
“I went into a room with fire covering the walls and ceiling, went from the top of the truck ladder onto the side of a building, broke into a door, and did a search and rescue,” she said.
Terrones is also excited about the possibility of breaking a barrier in the Sapulpa Fire Department, and has been putting in the work to make the dream a reality.
“I talked to some of the Sapulpa firemen and they told me the women who have always tried to get on their department have never passed either the physical or writing test, which are both required,” she said. “I am very dedicated to becoming the first. I workout at 5:30 every morning before school to stay fit.”
That dedication is paying off on the soccer field, too. Terrones, who has been playing soccer for the last 12 years, is leading the charge for the Lady Chieftains, who are in excellent position to make a deep run in the Class 5A state playoffs in May.
“I am excited for our district games because we have never won, and we have a better chance this year than the other years I’ve played,” she said.
However, the Lady Chieftains won the tournament they hosted this season, the Sapulpa Classic, and outscored opponents 31-0 during an eight-game stretch this season. Terrones’ unselfish play has led to a lot of those scoring outbursts.
“The strongest part of my game is being able to assist and holding the ball,” she said. “I am working on faster release to my teammates.”
