Tulsa Tech offers a wide range of programs to its students to give them a headstart on their future careers. Preston attends the Lemley Memorial Campus and is in the Carpentry Program and he is readying himself for a future career.
“I decided on the carpentry course for several reasons,” he said. “The first reason being, that I would learn useful skills that would help me be able to fix or remodel things in my own home. Second, I always wanted to start a business one day, so I thought that maybe if I became familiar enough with the trade one day I could start my own company in the trade.”
Horne is a senior at Booker T. Washington High School and he says that his first introduction to Tulsa Tech came from a friend who was signing up and he saw the benefits of the program.
“I heard about it through a friend that was planning on applying,” Horne said. “I got interested because I felt like it would be a good use of my time to learn new skills instead of taking classes that were not needed for me to graduate.”
For someone that is not sure about enrolling at Tulsa Tech, he says that it is important to select the program with the right fit.
“I would tell someone who is considering tech to make sure they are really passionate about whatever course they choose to take,” he said. “When you choose a course you are not passionate about the work can feel tedious and repetitive. I would also warn them to research the program to make sure it is not a waste of their time.”
With his senior year winding down, Horned already knows the path that he is going to take once he graduates.
My plan after high school is to serve a full-time mission with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints,” he stated. “I will serve for two years in another part of the world where I will be sharing what is most important to me, which is the gospel of Jesus Christ. After I return I plan on attending Brigham Young University and taking construction management courses. From there, I will see where life takes me.”
