2023 Union Redhawks Girls Basketball Preview – Presented By Kerry Engelson – Shelter Insurance

GIRLS

Coach: Chaun Davis

22-23 Record: 5-19

With experienced players returning to the court for head coach Chaun Davis, things are looking up for the Lady Redhawks. We have 75 percent of our production back from last year, so we are looking to build on that experience. With the returners we have, along with the energy, effort, and chemistry our girls bring, plus the addition of our freshmen group, we feel our program is headed in the right direction. Though each season comes with its ups and downs, we are positive there will be more ups than downs this year. We believe hard work pays off, so we are banking on reaping the fruits of our labor,” said Davis. One senior everyone is excited to see on the court is Aaliyah Smith (6-2, Sr.). The post player is known for her work ethic, athleticism, and positive attitude she brings to the court. “We look forward to her presence on the inside and are excited to see what her senior year has in store for her,” said Davis. Tylei Richardson (5-11, Sr.) is the only other senior on the team and will play in the paint with Smith. The junior class includes VYPE Top 100 nominee JaMiya

Woodard (5-10, Jr.) at point guard. Woodard is a versatile player and a matchup problem for most opponents. Also look for Vanessa Coleman (5-9, Jr.), Kaitlyn Gipson (5-2, Jr.), Brooke Bettis (5-5, Jr.), Esme’ Smith (5-11, Jr.), and Ty’Reunae Taylor (5-3, Jr.). The sophomore class includes Alyna Clark (5-6), Yonae’ Edwards (5-8), Isabella McSwain (5-2), Amiyah Richardson (5-7), Janaiya Rogers (5-3), and Whitney Smith (5-6). McSwain is a player who has worked hard to get on the court and is not afraid of big moments. Esme’ Smith is another player coach Davis is excited to see play. Her willingness to play a physical style and hustle for loose balls and rebounds is one reason she is seeing more playing time. The freshman class coach Davis referenced includes Mya Patton (5-11), DaMaria Daniels (5-5), and Jhazmyn Herron (5-4).
