Every sport requires practice, dedication, and concentration. The sport of golf also requires you to be a bit of a topographer, weather predictor, and psychologist. Handling the pressure of an important shot or the disappointment of making a less than perfect shot, is something every golfer must manage. For Regent Prep junior Benton Manly, his six years as a golfer has taught him to be all of those things. As a teammate and a multi-sport athlete, Manly said the thing he loves the most about being a student-athlete is the support.
“At Regent, my favorite thing is how many students participate in different sports. It’s great to see others supporting one another on teams. And the Coaches add great enthusiasm to each season,” said Manly.
The student body at Regent Prep is known for being supportive. A fact not lost on Manly.
“I love how the student body all participates in each sport to support one another,” said Manly.
Currently in basketball season, Manly is looking forward to competing on the golf course in the spring and is hoping to bring a title to the Regent trophy case.
“My teammates do a great job of finding a balance between productive practice and having fun. I love to play with some pressure and adrenaline. You are constantly playing the course, others, and yourself. Never a dull moment in a big tournament. The goal this year is to win state. Great competition last year and didn’t get the job done but excited to give it another run. I feel that I’ve improved, and I want to give myself the best shot to win the biggest tournament. Team is looking great. Got some new incoming freshmen and looking to develop previous talent,” said Manly.
Manly is a member of the student council and the Beta Club at Regent and hopes to one day continue his education in college while still playing the game he loves.
“I would love to play college golf and receive a great education,” said Manly.
