Home is where the heart is…a place you feel connected to emotionally, somewhere you have fond memories of; being near your family and loved ones provides the greatest emotion bond. For Gail Young, her experiences as a college athlete as well as being an involved student at Northeastern State University have resulted in a record-setting experience.
“I didn’t just look at the school or the softball program, I also looked at the town and it reminded me a lot of home where everyone knows their neighbors,” recalled Young, a 2017 graduate from Collinsville. “I knew it was the right place for me.”
Since arriving on campus, the competitive and compassionate RiverHawks softball standout has achieved a record-setting legacy as the program’s career leader in pitching victories and strikeouts in the circle all the while remaining humble when asked about her accomplishments.
“I’m not big into numbers, I just play to win,” said the fifth-year senior who has completed her undergraduate degree majoring in Nutritional Sciences focusing on Dietetics. “I’m proud to wear NSU across my chest. The school has given me as much to me as I’ve been able to accomplish.”
RiverHawks head coach Clay Davis confirms that with Gail Young, it’s more than you what you see on the softball field.
“Gail is much more than what you see in the circle, things that go way beyond the uniform,” said Davis. “She refuses to fail and consistently finds a way to help others win through her letters and notes to teammates. She mentors them and takes time to listen to their needs. I’ve learned to be a better coach by being around Gail Young.”
In addition to softball, Young stands strong in her faith; defined in simple words…to those to whom much is given, much is required. It’s a personal commitment Young examples through her leadership involvement on campus including serving a president of NSU Student Athlete Advisory Committee and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
After softball and her upcoming marriage to her fiancé Konner Neal, a former RiverHawks baseball player, Young’s career plans include medical school and practicing rural family medicine.
Gail Young has defined the spirit of the RiverHawks through her actions. She describes her NSU experience as family, where opportunity awaits for everyone.
“Northeastern State University offers everyone the opportunity to learn and grow. It just feels like home.”
