Jackson Wells is a senior at Oologah High School, where he has competed on the cheer squad all four years. Wells started as the school mascot before switching to competitive cheer halfway into his freshman year.
“I’ve enjoyed cheer because of the experience it’s brought me and the people I’ve met along the way,” Wells said. “I’ve also enjoyed competing and getting to see new places.”
Now, Wells is the co-captain for the football and basketball seasons and is also the co-captain for the competitive cheer squad. Last season, Wells was named to the All-American Cheer team.
“Jackson is the only guy on our squad,” coach Melissa Fisher said. “He brought our mascot, Marty, to life but quickly realized he wanted to do more. During the basketball season of his freshman year, he started cheering some and picked it up quickly.”
“He is the kind of athlete that makes you want to be better and do better,” she continued. “He always works hard, never complains, and is always willing to help others. The fans love to watch him because he is very entertaining.”
Outside of cheer, Wells competes on the debate and drama teams while also being involved with the school choir. Upon graduation, Wells plans to attend college while studying architecture, psychology, or biochemistry.
Wells credits his parents, Jay and Jessica, and coach for his success in and out of cheer.
“My mom has taught me how to be a kind figure in the community and helped me through tough times,” Wells said. “My dad showed me how to live a fun life and how to get away with stuff. My cheer coach, who took a chance on me, changed my life. I’m impressed with her ability to control a group of teenagers. And finally, Jim Carrey for his ability to make people laugh and his personality has really shaped my personality to be more of an outstanding person and try to make people laugh.”
