Booker T. Washington’s Kyra Yarbrough – “Talk of the Tailgate” presented by Taco Bueno

Booker T. Washington is a special place to be a student. For junior Kyra Yarbrough, the best things about the school is it’s history. As a member of the varsity cheer squad, Yarbrough said being on a team at Tulsa Washington is like no other.

“I personally wanted to attend BTW to be a part of its rich African American history and Hornet Pride.  The academic curriculum is excellent, challenging, but yet rewarding. It will definitely prepare me for college and help establish my career path,” Yarbrough said. “What I love most about my team and teammates are our team dynamics. Our team is made up of a diverse group of students from different backgrounds with various skill levels. We are constantly learning and growing together as a team.”

Anyone who has attended a game at Washington knows Hornet Pride is a tradition like no other. Having competed as a competitive cheerleader since the age of four, Yarbrough knows when the lights come on, it’s time to set the stage and live up to the traditions of Hornet athletics.

“Friday night is the highlight of my week at BTW. Celebrating our teams with the student section, cheering on the crowd, and dancing with band in hornet style is so much fun,” said Yarbrough. “Of course, my favorite moment of the game is celebrating a touchdown to the Hornet victory song.”

Yarbrough said she will miss being on the sidelines for Friday night football, but she will always be part of that great tradition wherever she goes. Yarbrough would like to attend college for forensic science once her days at Booker T. Washington come to a close. “What I’ll miss most about Friday night is getting ready for the game to start with, meeting up in the cheer room, tumbling in with the football team, and many celebrations,” said Yarbrough.
Kyra Yarbrough and the Booker T. Washington Hornets are always the “talk of the tailgate!”
