When an athlete puts on a jersey with the team name across their chest, they know that there is a lot of responsibility that comes along with it. It does more than just allow them to play the game they love, they also become a representative for their school and community. Tyland Holdman says that wearing the jersey is a big deal and not something he takes lightly.
“It means a lot to me,” he said. “Especially with the history of Booker T. Washington High School. I have to realize playing here is bigger than me.”
Holdman is a senior at Booker T. Washington, where he is a guard on the basketball team. He has worked hard to get where he is and says that he knows he could not do it by himself.
“It takes a lot to become a great athlete,” he said. “Consistent hard work and the ability to be coachable are both very important. One thing that has kept me motivated to work hard has been my family’s support. I would not be where I am today without them.”
Tyland also enjoys the teammates he is surrounded by at games and in practice. They do a great job of helping each other become better basketball players.
“The guy I enjoy working against the most is Lathan Boone,” he said. “He is a very smart player and makes me stay solid on defense because of how well-rounded he is. The most underrated players on our team are all of our younger players. They are new to this scene but are getting adjusted well.”
There have been a number of people that have had a positive impact on Holdman’s life over the years, but he has a few that have been outstanding role models.
“My grandparents are some of the biggest influences on my life,” he said. “They’ve worked so hard for our family and shaped me to be who I am. Also, all of my math teachers because when I was stuck on something, they have been open to helping me learn what I need to do to solve the problem.”
Along with being a high school student-athlete, Tyland is also taking college classes and works as a referee on weekends.
