Webster’s Hondo Avington – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by: Arnold’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers

Athletes work hard to achieve the goals that they have set for themselves. While some goals may be bigger than others, the common thread is that they all require something from the athlete in order to achieve it. Hondo Avington plays multiple sports and he knows what it takes to be his best when he competes.

“For me to get where I am, it has taken hard work, dedication, and being consistent,” Avington said. “My family is something that motivates me because I want to make them proud.”

A sophomore at Daniel Webster High School, Hondo plays basketball, football, and runs track for the Warriors. He is also a member of 100 Black Men.

As with most young people, there are a number of people that Avington looks up to, both athletically and in everyday life.

“My biggest role model would have to be Steph Curry,” he said. “I have watched him since I was little and he is just an incredible athlete and person. Another person that has had an influence on me is my teacher, Mr. Bryan. He always makes sure I’m on top of all my grades and checks on me to see how I’m doing.”

Throughout his time playing sports, there have been some games that have stood out to Hondo as important moments.

“I think my highlight moment so far was when I had 29 points against Nathan Hale,” he recalled. “It was a really good game and I was having a good night.”

Whether he is in practice or in a game, Hondo has a few guys that he enjoys going up against and he feels like helps him become a better player.

“I really enjoy competing against my close friends,” he stated. “It is more competitive. My teammate Terrance Franklin does a good job of pushing me to work harder.”

Wearing the Webster uniform is important to Avington and he says that it is not something that he takes for granted.

“It means a lot to me to be able to represent my school when I play,” he said. “No everyone gets this opportunity.”
