Skiatook’s Canyon Curtis – Athlete spotlight presented by Oklahoma Army national guard

Skiatook High School varsity wrestler Canyon Curtis has made the decision to serve his state and his country by enlisting in the Oklahoma National Guard. Curtis comes from a multi-generational family that has served in the military.

“I will be the fourth generation in my family to join the military,” said Curtis. “I decided to join the Oklahoma National Guard because I want to work in the military, and I want to have the ability to get my college tuition paid for.”

After he graduates from Skiatook High School, Curtis will ship out to basic training where his athletic background will certainly help him through the physical portions of his training.

“I’ve been a varsity wrestler for three years now and I used to play football and I’m a ruff neck for our football team with a bunch of other athletes and friends. I also run the social media account for our grade and I’m trying to run for student council again,” said Curtis.

Once he has completed his basic training and AIT (Advanced Individual Training) school, Curtis will serve as an 11B or Infantryman.

Curtis said the recruiting process seemed relatively easy and everything went smooth for the senior. He is excited to start his military service here in Oklahoma.

“I love giving back and helping the community when they have no one else to depend on and being able to help them would be an honor,” said Curtis.

In his free time, you can usually find Curtis with his friends playing some type of sport.
