SNU Leadership Spotlight – Valliant’s Weston Bates

Current teacher and head baseball coach at Valliant High School, Weston Bates, recently completed the Southern Nazarene University Master of Leadership graduate degree program.

Coach Bates said he selected SNU for several reasons, but his focus was on the curriculum and the ability to continue working.

“Southern Nazarene University was right for me because it gave me a high-level education, but allowed me to continue to teach and coach,” said Bates.

Looking toward his future as an educator, Bates decided to take the next step to ensure his career path is on track. By earning his master’s degree from SNU, Bates has set a course for his career which will eventually lead him to more opportunities as an administrator.

“It’ll open doors to more paths in the field of education,” said Bates.

For Bates, there were many aspects of the class he enjoyed. From the professors to his fellow students, Bates said the course was perfect for his lifestyle.

“Something I enjoyed was working with my cohort members, and learning the administrative side of school,” Bates said. “The willingness of our professors to work with us as people and students was one thing that caught me a little off guard. They understand that we have teach and/or coach and help us out in balancing work and school.”

Which is a big reason many educators are following in their peers’ footsteps. SNU offers flexible courses that are perfect for the working educator.

Coach Bates offered some advice to other educators who are looking to continue their education and one day work beyond the classroom.

“Go with what suits you best, Southern Nazarene University is great and will be more than willing to help you in any way,” said Bates.
