Union High School’s Maiya Moss started cheerleading when she was in the first grade. Now a senior, Maiya said she loves being part of the Redhawks cheer squad and a student-athlete at Union.
“The most I love about my team and teammates is their dedication and the friendships we’ve all made,” Maiya said. “Union is a great place to go to school because of the diversity and school spirit.”
This season the Redhawks opened their new stadium and for seniors like Maiya, it was an honor to be the first class to call it home.
The Friday night lights shine bright at Tuttle Stadium and Maiya said she loves being on the sideline and getting the crowd and student section hyped for the game.
“Friday night lights are special to me because I love school spirit and being in front of the crowd with my team. The energy on Fridays is always awesome,” said Maiya.
Her favorite moment came against the Broken Arrow Tigers last season when they beat BA in the semifinals. Maiya said she loves how intense the games can get.
“The game against Broken Arrow was so intense,” Maiya said. “That is what I will miss the most about Friday night lights is being on the field and the intensity. After this we must be in the stands.”
When her cheering days come to an end, Maiya said she would like to pursue cosmetology or go to college to become an elementary school teacher, but for now she is focused on making the most of her senior year and enjoying those moments before, during and after the game.
“After the games my team and I usually will go out to eat,” said Maiya. “My favorite Taco Bueno item is Party Taco.”
