UNION REDHAWKS
BOYS
Coach: Rudy Garcia
22-23 Record: 14-12
In his 29th season as head coach (35th with UHS), Rudy Garcia and the Redhawks look to build on the 14-win season from a year ago. “Return four starters, have good balance between post and guard play. Experience senior class which we have not had, it should be a positive for us,” said Garcia. Erik Madrid (7-2, Sr.) returns at center where he averaged 12.3 points and 6.0 rebounds a game last season. Obviously, his size is the first thing you notice, but Madrid continues to develop his game. “Big E” has touch around the rim and excellent instincts down low with the ball. He also forces shooters to adjust in the paint. Korbin Gunn (6-0, Jr.) and Dalen Fuller (6-4, Sr.) are the engines that make this Union motor run. Gunn averaged 6.9 points and 5.4
assists per game while Fuller accounted for 12 points a game. Gunn will start at point guard where he sets the tone for the team. Miles Flemons (6-8, So.) started as a freshman and has a chance to be one of the top players on the team and in the class. Freshman rarely find the court at Union, but Flemons continues to develop and could be a real factor for the Redhawks this season. Kenneth Dorsey (6-0, Sr.) and Journey Chaney-Jones (6-2, Sr.) are two guards expected to see more time this season and play some important minutes for coach Garcia. Justin Chappelle (5-10, Jr.) is another athletic guard who averaged 4.0 points a game last season. Carson Malham (6-2, Sr.), Marcus Ugbah (6-0, Sr.), and Michael Gilyard (6-0, Sr.) are all players to watch this season. Assisting coach Garcia are coaches Steve Geary, Mark Ritter, and Derrek Lewis.
