Golf season has begun, and Bixby High School’s Taylor Tevis is ready for a great junior season. Tevis has played the game for three years now and is looking forward to representing the Spartans on the course.

“What I love the most about being a student-athlete is the person it’s molding you to be. Being a student-athlete isn’t easy, I feel it teaches you how to manage your time, handle different stresses and how to work with others in a team environment,” said Tevis.

Having great teammates certainly helps. For Tevis, her teammates are a source of inspiration and a settling force when playing.

“I love how my teammates are always so positive and look on the bright side even when we don’t have our best days. My teammates are always supportive and push you to not just become a better player but a better teammate and person,” said Tevis.

Also a member of National Honor Society, and the Athletic Leadership Advisory Council, Tevis said she enjoys her classes and being part of the high school experience at BHS.

“I have two favorite subjects in school, the first is History and my second is Math. Mrs. Tomlinson was my favorite history teacher, she made learning about history very fun and interactive. Mrs. Tevis was my favorite Math teacher, because if I didn’t put Math and her on this list, I may be missing by the time this article comes out,” said Tevis.

Coming into the new season, Tevis said she has worked on her game and is excited to see that work pay off. As a team, Bixby has continued to work hard and improve as a group.

“I underwent a major swing change my sophomore year in order to gain distance, swing speed and more consistent ball striking. This swing change has helped me increase my swing speed by 15 mph and gain roughly 45 yards off the tee,” said Tevis. “We didn’t have the start we wanted but I will say we have a ton of potential. We have a young team and once we get a little experience under our belt, I see things really coming together and having a successful season.”

Like many of her peers, Tevis has a course she loves to play.

“My favorite course to play is Jackson Hole Golf and Tennis Club in Wyoming. Not only is the weather amazing in the summer but it sits near the Teton Mountains which makes for beautiful scenery. The course also has numerous streams, brooks, rivers, and lakes surrounding and intertwining the holes which make it difficult but also provides the chance to see some really cool wildlife. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones II and is closed for about six months of the year, so the course is always in immaculate shape when it’s open,” said Tevis.

The future class of 2025 graduate said she wants to play at the next level.

“After graduation, I want to play golf at the collegiate level and pursue a business degree,” said Tevis.
