Bixby is home to outstanding athletics, great school spirit, and Julie Jones, the 2022 Tulsa Area Hometown Hero. Jones is not only an active member of the Bixby High School student body, but she is also an involved member of the community. She says the community does a lot of great things that she is proud to be a part of.
“My favorite part about being in my community is when we come together to support the school and the students,” she said. “Some of the things I’m most proud of include all of the schools bringing tons of books to donate to kids in domestic abuse shelters. And at the high school, we’ve been coming up with and successfully hosting fundraisers for Make-A-Wish just to name a few.”
Though she is not someone that seeks out the spotlight and would rather be behind the scenes, Julie says being named Hometown Hero is an honor.
“I am flattered to be recognized for doing something I enjoy,” she said. “Being called a hometown hero means that people have seen me volunteering my time and energy for my school and community.”
As a senior at Bixby, Jones is also involved in a number of extracurricular activities. She is a member of the swim team, student council, National Honor Society, Make-A-Wish Youth Leadership Council, and the Clay Target Club. She has also served as a class officer for the past three years.
“My favorite part about being a Spartan is being part of a supportive community and being involved with all the school activities.”
There have been some really outstanding role models that have had an impact on Jones’ life, but she says that there are a few that have really played a big role.
“Some role models in my life are my leadership teachers, Jennifer Phenicie and DeWayne Patterson,” she said. “Also, my parents who always push me to be confident outside of my comfort zone and be the best version of myself. I would not be the person that I am today without these people.”
After she graduates high school, Jones plans to attend the University of Oklahoma where she plans to pursue a degree in nursing.
