Melissa Poffel
Bixby Mom of the Month

Bixby mother of two, Melissa Poffel is the current president of the Bixby basketball booster club where she handles all the fundraising for the basketball program. Son Trevor is a basketball player and track athlete, while daughter Madeleine plays basketball and softball.

“I try to offer my time to any organization that my kids are involved in as well. I like the feeling of community that surrounds volunteering and the people you meet along the way. I especially enjoy volunteering for organizations that my kids are involved in because their childhood and adolescent years go by so quickly and I want to soak in every moment with them,” said Poffel.

The club president strongly believes being involved in your kids’ activities is important for many reasons.

“Not to be redundant but when they say time is a thief, it certainly is. Being involved in their activities gives me a front row seat to all the highs and lows in their lives. It’s comfort for them to know I’m always around. If I weren’t involved, I’d miss so much. We do not get another opportunity to show up for our kids, it’s imperative not to waste the one we have,” said Poffel.

Despite being a graduate from Douglas County High School in Castle Rock, Colorado, Poffel said raising kids in the Bixby Public School system is the best.

“Bixby is the best. Plain and simple. The administration, educators, staff, coaches, parents, and kids are all the top notch. Bixby has the perfect dose of small town charm in the middle of the city. We feel blessed beyond measure to be a part of this community,” said Poffel.

There isn’t much of it, but when the Poffel family does have free time, they usually spend it together.

“Free time? What’s that? Our days are mostly filled with sports, practices, and school activities but we do love to travel, watch movies, and spend time outside when we can,” said Poffel.
