Connors State College Hall of Fame basketball coach Bill Muse has some pretty definite thoughts on what he feels it takes to walk in the Cowboy Way at Connors. “I think it’s a matter of doing things the right way with discipline, effort, being on time, going to class and being successful,” said Muse.
And Muse feels that incoming freshman Xavier Glenn from Bixby is a player that will fit that mold. “Xavier has a great work ethic which I saw when I scouted him last season,” said Muse. “He wants to learn and get better. He’s like a sponge-everything you teach him, he tries. He listens and tries to improve himself. I think he’s got the potential to be a really great player here.”
For Xavier, the choice to come to Connors was pretty easy once Muse showed up to talk with him. “I was impressed with what Coach Muse had to say and I know he’s got a great track record of helping players get to the next level with all of his Division I contacts. There have been a lot of great players through here, so I think it says a lot about the tradition here and what’s expected of you if you’re going to play at Connors,” said Glenn who feels his greatest strengths as an incoming freshman are his mid-range jumper and his ability to get to the basket.
Although Xavier sold himself on the court, Muse also acknowledged the input of former Spartan coach Sam Fairchild who helped develop Glenn. “Sam deserves a lot of credit for developing Xavier and giving me a heads-up about him. He told me he had a diamond-in-the-rough kind of player who he felt was one of the best players in the Tulsa area.”
Becoming part of the Connors family has been an easy adjustment according to the “X-man”. “My teammates really welcomed me with open arms and it was easy to establish a bond with them right away.”
Xavier credits his two brothers, Kingston and Kelecy, as well as his mother and grandmother with being a big influence in his life as he moved on in his basketball career and says he hopes to one day play professional basketball in the NBA or overseas. But his first order of business will be living up to the kind of player that can perform in the Cowboy Way.
