Coweta’s Alexis Shelton – Athlete Spotlight – Presented By Redbud Physical Therapy

Throughout an athlete’s career, there will be moments or events that will be special to them. Coweta’s Alexis Shelton’s favorite memory so far of cheering is when she is able to attend cheer camp with her team.

“The highlight moment of my career is probably going to cheer camp,” she stated. “I love using the time to get closer with my teammates and learning how to compete with other schools. Last year at cheer camp I made the All-American team and it was a very proud moment for me.”

Shelton is a junior at Coweta High School. Along with being a member of the cheer squad, she is also a part of the Johnson-O’Malley program and the National Honor Society.

Being the best cheerleader she can be is not something that just happens. Alexis knows that it takes time and effort in order to reach the place she wants to be.

“When it comes to being successful in cheer, or any sport in my experience, is consistency and lots of practice,” she stated. “Whenever the practices get tough you can’t give up or not give one hundred percent effort. I stay motivated by thinking about my future. I want to be successful and go to college and get a career and I think about that when trying to get through a hard assignment or practice.”

Alexis has had a few people that have had an impact on her life and helped shape her into the person she is today.

“Some of my biggest role models are my parents,” she stated. “They taught me about hard work and encourage me to push through whatever rough patches I come into contact with. One of my teachers, Mr. Poindexter, has been an influence on me in the way that whenever any student needs a sanctuary to regroup during the school day, you can always rely on him.”

The teammates that she cheers alongside are a special group for Alexis. But she says that there are a few that she has cheered with for a long time and their bond is strong.

“In practice, I enjoy working against a couple of teammates. Specifically, Lauren, Brooklyn, and Baiker because we have all cheered together since junior high and continue to grow and push each other every year.”
