High school athletes that want to be successful at their sport have to be willing to put in the time and effort. Along with the desire to be successful in their athletics, they also have to be good students in the classroom in order to compete. Macee Matthews is a junior at Coweta High School and she says that while it can be a balancing act at times, you have to figure out what works best for you.
“As a basketball player, I go to individual skills training three days a week with Keenan Curry,” Matthews said. “I also do speed, agility, and lifts three to four times a week with Josh Jackson. Sometimes it can be difficult to balance school work, athletics, and life. Junior year classes are definitely the hardest so finding time to balance those with basketball practices and also having time to spend time with family and friends can be very challenging. Learning to take a step back when needed is very important.”
As an upperclassman at Coweta, it is no surprise that there are younger students that look up to her as an example and a role model. Macee keeps that in mind and she does her best to make a positive impact.
“Being a positive role model is a huge thing for me because our team is mostly underclassmen,” she said. “Everyday I make sure I’m showing good body language and being a positive influence for them, on and off the court.”
Whenever she is preparing for game day, Matthews has a few different artists on her playlist. She says that Drake, Future, 21 Savage, and Metro Boomin are a few artists that help her get in game mode.
As she looks back on her career so far, Macee can see her growth and how all the work has paid off. But if she could get a message to her younger self, she has no doubt what she would say.
“I would tell my younger self to be a kid as long as you can and enjoy where you are.”
Becoming who she is today, both on and off the court, Macee knows that she could not have done it without some special people.
“I want to say thank you to my parents for always being there for me,” she stated. “Thank you to my trainers and coaches for always pushing me past my limits and seeing my potential. Thank you to all of the college coaches that have been recruiting me for the past few years and seeing my potential and hard work.”
VYPE’s Rebekah McIntosh would like to give a personal shoutout to the Coweta superstar.
“Macee, good luck in all your future endeavors. You are a talented, young lady with the determination to go far…So go make your mark, Thirteen!” -Bekah
