Devin Martinez or coach Martinez as many know him, recently completed the Master of Arts in Sports Management and Administration at Southern Nazarene University while working full time for Bixby Public Schools. The program fit perfectly into his busy schedule.
“The MASMA program at SNU was ideal for me because it was related to the field of employment I was already in. Also, I have a family, a wife and four kids with activities. The SNU program was 100 percent online and convenient for my schedule,” said Martinez.
The online course was still able to offer Martinez the interaction with other students which made the experience more enjoyable.
“Interacting with other like-minded professionals in the same program as well as the knowledge and information I accrued is what I enjoyed the most,” said Martinez. “It surprised me how patient and kind the professors are. There is certainly a standard and expectation, but it is not without grace.”
The Master of Arts in Sports Management and Administration program will help educators and coaches like Martinez continue to climb the ladder professionally and help make them a candidate for higher level positions within a school system.
“I will be able to apply for athletic director and other administrative positions,” said Martinez.
The challenges of being a coach and a teacher can be difficult, but for Martinez, finishing his master’s degree and having the opportunity to further his career made attending SNU worth it. He offers this advice to anyone looking for a place to earn a master’s degree while working full time.
“Go for it! Why put off tomorrow what can be accomplished today?” Martinez said.
