OFFENSE

The Patriots move to Class 3A this season, something head coach Jared McCoy is excited for, but admits the travel will be a challenge. “We return a lot of starters from last year but will have to replace some of our starters with sophomores next year. We feel really good about the move to Class 3A, but the travel schedule will be challenging,” said coach McCoy. Nine starters are back on offense including quarterback Kirk Francis (6-2, 183, Sr.). Francis is built in the mold of many past Patriot quarterbacks and should have an outstanding season. Running back Tagg Campbell (5-10, 181, Sr.) will handling most of the running duties with Breck Nauman (5-11, 187, Sr.) coming back as one of the go-to players in the passing game at wide receiver. Also look for Mario Darington (5-11, 162, Sr.) at wide out giving Francis another target in the passing game. Rhett Ruefer (6-2, 212, Sr.) and Mason Fields (6-0, 267, Sr.) will anchor an offensive line that could utilize a few underclassmen this season. Also look for Eason Wagenblatt (6-2, 190, So.) to make the move to receiver this season.

DEFENSE

Seven players are back on the Patriot defense which plans to base in a 3-4 and give the opposing offense multiple pre-snap looks. “We vary our front, coverages, and pressures every play and try to keep our kids moving. It allows our kids to play more aggressively when we keep them moving,” said coach McCoy. Isaac Penland (6-2, 205, Sr.) is an aggressive and quick defensive end offenses must pay attention to. Seth McCoy (6-1, 194, Sr.) and Corley Wagner (5-11, 197, Jr.) are two outside linebackers who swarm to the ball and are versatile enough to play the run or stop the pass. Jaxon Grimes (6-1, 186, Jr.) and Reid Roth (6-0, 192, Sr.) get the start at the two safety spots giving coach McCoy two dependable players deep in the secondary. Kendale Johnson (6-0, 210, Sr.) could be the x-factor at nose guard for the Patriots this season. Campbell has started every game at corner since his freshman season, but he moved to middle linebacker last season. McCoy is looking to move Campbell back to corner in 2022.
