Leadership is an important part of any athletic team. Not just from the coaches, but also having athletes that are outstanding leaders can be a huge asset to any team. The Victory Christian cheer squad has some really good leaders, according to cheer coach Gerri Chandler, and she says that her team enjoys more than just cheering.
“We have eleven seniors on this year’s team,” Chandler said. “They are all great leaders on our team. I think our team’s biggest strength is that they have servant hearts. Our team constantly and willingly serves our school, church, and community.”
Gabi Ruffin is one of those seniors on this year’s squad and she is also the Team Spirit Coordinator. She enjoys cheering for her team, no matter what the outcome of the game is.
“I love being able to show my school spirit and being able to cheer our team on every friday night,” Ruffin said. “Win or lose, I will always enjoy cheering on our team. I love the feelings on Friday night when we win and we sing the fight song with the football team and the band and the crowd joins in. It is something unimaginable.”
Senior captain Angelina Baca likes that no matter what happens, she knows that her teammates will always have her back.
“I like how our team has grown to be a family, and though we don’t always get along we are always there for each other in the end,” she said. “We build each other up when times are rough and help each other to grow to become better. Though we may not all be best friends during school, if there ever comes a problem I know that they’ll always have my back and I’ll always have theirs.”
Noble Swam is another senior captain of the team. The community coming together to cheer for the Conquerors is a really great feeling for Swam.“What I love most about cheering for my school is the unity it creates. When we cheer, the student section and the rest of the fans join it. It’s nice to see all those people rooting for the same thing,” Noble said.
