Webster’s Karmonie Waldon – Athlete Spotlight – Presented By Arnold’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers

By Derrick Smith

There are a number of people that can have an impact on the life of an athlete. Parents and coaches can play a big role because of the influence they have on them. But for Karmonie Waldon, the person that had the biggest influence on him was a fellow teammate.
“Anthony Pritchard is one of my biggest influences on the game of basketball,” Waldon said. “But he is also a role model for me because he has so much love for the game. I was able to be his teammate the past a couple years before he graduated and went on to college, but he always pushed me to go harder so I can get better. Also, him being one of the first to go to college and play at the D1 level just makes me want to work harder.”

Karmonie is a sophomore at Webster High School where he plays point guard for the basketball team. He started playing when he was in the sixth grade, but this is his first year to play varsity because of Covid-19.

One of Waldon’s biggest goals is to become the best player that he can be. While there is a lot that goes into that, he knows that it will be worth it.

“It takes a lot of effort,” he said. “Wanting to come to the gym every day and stay after practice to get shots up are huge. You also have to take care of your body off the court so you will feel your best when you are out on the court. Also, being dedicated is important as well.”

Matt Watson, the boys’ basketball coach at Webster, says that Waldon is a solid member of the team and he expects a lot from him.

“Karmonie is a gifted player with a high ceiling and an open mind which allows him to consistently improve,” coach said. “He is a quick guard who can make plays in a variety of settings. He has the instincts and foundation to play high level basketball.”
