Cheer teams do more than just stand on the sideline at a sporting event and cheer on their school’s teams. They also have their own competitions that they have to work hard and prepare for. Oologah head cheer coach Melissa Fisher is in her fourth year leading the Mustangs cheer program and she says that teamwork is one of her teams strengths.

“Our team is great at putting in the hard work,” Fisher said. “They really come together and help each other to make things work. They don’t give up. They communicate effectively and help each other succeed. This is a really great group I have this season.”

Natalie Davis is a junior and the captain of the football cheer squad. She says that she is thankful for her teammates that she is able to cheer alongside.“What I enjoy about my team is that no matter what, in the end, we all show up for each other because we are all a family and all want to be better and grow as a team.”

Coach Fisher says that her squad is competing at competitions this year for the first time and they are excited to see how they do.

“This will be our first year to compete,” she said. “At camp we won spirit stick both nights, second place in cheer, and earned gold and red ribbons for excellence and superior ratings.”

As the captain of the basketball cheer squad, senior Breanna Ray says that she enjoys all the aspects of cheer and being a part of this team.“I enjoy forming new friendships and created a family outside of the school,” she said. “Also i like that we know how to set aside our differences and work together to make our goals happen. And we focus on building each other up rather than tearing others down.”

Serving as the co-captain of the football and basketball cheer squads, senior Jackson Wells is appreciative of what this team means to him.“I enjoy the environment of the cheer squad. It’s like a second family or close friends who I’m always excited to be around.”

Overall, coach Fisher is excited about this season with her team.

“I’m super proud of this group, we have come a long way and still have a ways to go but they all dive in and are eager to learn new things.”
