Catoosa’s Russel Dugger – Athlete Spotlight – Presented By Oklahoma Driving School

Motivation can be an important factor in an athlete’s career. Though they know that things can get tough or difficult at times, keeping themselves focused on their goals can help to achieve them. Russel Dugger knows how to keep himself on the path to success.

“I keep myself motivated by working on my short-term goals,” he said. “Instead of trying to attack the huge long-term goals I have, doing the smaller goals each day will help me get closer to the long-term goals.”

Dugger is a senior at Catoosa High School. He plays football and is also a member of the track team. Outside of sports, he is also on the Senior Board and the Leadership Council.

As an athlete, you need to be at your best every time you compete. While this is true, Russel knows that every time he steps on the field, he is at a slight disadvantage.

“I have strabismus in my eyes,” he said. “Basically, I cannot see three-dimensional. It can be difficult sometimes, but I have learned how to work through it.”

He has put in a lot of work over his career, but Dugger knows that there is more than just the physical work that goes into it.

“One of the most important keys to success is having trust,” he said. “It takes trusting your coaches even when it does not make sense to you at the moment. I have had some great role models in my life. My dad would have to be at the top of that list. He has achieved things in his life that I want to mimic, so I try to soak up all the information that I can. Also, my teacher, Mr. DeBella because he opened my mind to always analyze what I’m seeing. He taught me there’s always a ‘why’.”

Anytime that he puts on his Catoosa Indian uniform, Russel knows that he is playing for more than just himself. He is representing his school and community.

“It’s an awesome feeling, but also a big responsibility.”
