Skiatook’s Kraig Mewbourne – Teacher of the month – Presented by On Call Pediatrics Urgent Care

Kraig Mewbourne
Newman Middle School
Teacher of the Month
The Skiatook District Teacher of the Year is middle school teacher and coach Kraig Mewbourne. Mr. Mewbourne teaches 8 th grade Advanced History and coaches the 8 th grade football and baseball teams. He started his career in education in 2017 and MCs the high school and middle school pep assemblies and leads his social studies PLC team. Mr. Mewbourne points to one person who has mentored him in all aspects of his life.

“The list of mentors and former teachers that have influenced me is long. However, one of the biggest influences is Dustin McNeal. He was one of my high school football coaches and spent a lot of time pouring into my life. He valued me as a person and not simply as a player. He continues to mentor me today as a husband, father, teacher, and coach,” said Mewbourne.

Recently, Mr. Mewbourne was named the Skiatook District Teacher of the Year.

“The award meant a great deal, especially since I was nominated by my fellow teachers. There are so many excellent teachers in Skiatook and to represent them is a tremendous honor,” said Mewbourne.

As a coach, Mr. Mewbourne has an opportunity to have the same impact on his players as Dustin McNeal had on him.

“The relationships you make with kids as a coach is really unique. The countless hours you spend helping them develop as athletes and as a team gives you an opportunity to become more than just an authority figure but a mentor and advocate. It’s those special bonds that I love most about coaching,” said Mewbourne.

For Mr. Mewbourne, working as an educator for Skiatook Public Schools is the perfect situation for his career.

“I have felt incredibly valued and appreciated by fellow teachers, coaches, and administrators here. It’s a joy to work somewhere that you feel wanted and that you are making a difference in the community,” said Mewbourne.

The former Owasso High School and Cameron University graduate said he and his wife have three awesome kids who love to take walks, play outside, and have pizza movie nights together on Friday night. Mr. Mewbourne also enjoys watching Alabama football and woodworking in his free time.
