Holland Hall Dutch 2023 Football Team Preview – Presented by Mabrey Bank

HOLLAND HALL DUTCH

Coach: TAG GROSS

5-6

OFFENSE

After winning back-to-back Class 3A state titles in 2020 and 2021 and going 25-1 over that span, the 2022 season was a roller coaster ride that resulted in the Dutch’s first losing season since 2015 under veteran coach Tag Gross. Holland Hall lost their first five games including their first loss in the last five tries against intra-city rival Cascia Hall but then bounced back and won their last five games to make it into the playoffs where they lost out in the first round. Quarterback Matthew Underwood (6-4, 180, Jr.) will return to provide some experience in a vital skill position. Senior leadership for the Dutch will be provided by receivers Reese Myers (6-3, 210) and Parker Myers and running back Gary Teal (5-10, 190) running out of the one-back set. The Dutch will also welcome back a pair of sophomores who had excellent freshman campaigns in Kainon Gibson and Julius Wilson.

DEFENSE

After giving up an average of over 30 points a game in their first five losses last year, the Dutch righted the defensive ship by giving up only about 10 points a game in their final six contests including 34 points against Stigler in their playoff game. Gross is hoping that the last half trend will continue into the upcoming season. A good group of linebackers will be the heart of the Dutch defense with Teal, Parker Myers and Cole Muir (5-9, 150, Jr.). Senior Ben Korn will return to anchor the defensive front in Gross’ 3-4 alignment while junior Ty Mabrey and Jacob Bell (5-11, 170, So.) will be among the starters in the secondary. A highlight of the early season will be taking part in the All-Saints classic in Ft. Worth.
