JoEllen Armstrong’s son Grady Smith is a senior and standout baseball player for the Cardinals. Armstrong first got involved with her son’s sports as a volunteer doing jobs the coaching staff needed parent volunteers to do.
“I first got involved in my son’s sports activities when he started playing, but I took on a more designated role when he was 12 years old. I started by keeping the books and serving as the treasurer for his travel team,” said Armstrong. “Today, as a volunteer, I am actively involved in the booster club for his high school team. I served as the vice president of the booster club during his sophomore year, and I have been the treasurer for both his junior and senior years. In addition to my treasurer duties, I also assist the president with various tasks related to the booster club.”
Being a volunteer is something Armstrong enjoys and supporting the kids on the field is a top priority.
“What I enjoy most about being a volunteer is the opportunity to be closely involved in my son’s activities and contribute wherever I can. I also love being part of a group of parents who share the same goal of supporting our kids and their passion for baseball. Over the years, I’ve had a front-row seat to watch them grow from young boys into upstanding young men. I feel a sense of pride and excitement for what the future holds for them,” said Armstrong.
Armstrong said it’s important for parents to be involved in their kids’ lives and activities.
“I believe that parental involvement in their children’s activities is crucial. It demonstrates to your child that you support their interests and are invested in their world, including their successes and challenges. The time spent together on the way to and from games and practices has provided valuable opportunities for discussing life lessons that might not have arisen otherwise. Being part of a team or any extracurricular activity teaches children important skills such as commitment, structure, discipline, and teamwork contributing to their overall development as individuals,” said Armstrong.
A graduate of Barnsdall High School, Armstrong said she was coached by legendary Joe Gilbert, who certainly left an impression on Armstrong.
“I had the privilege of being coached by Joe Gilbert, who had a profound impact on my life. His influence extended beyond just sports; it played a significant role in my personal development and character,” said Armstrong.
But today, Collinsville is home and it’s a place Armstrong is proud to represent.
“Collinsville has a supportive community. The teachers and staff work hard to ensure an excellent education. Students have access to a wide range of extracurricular activities. The district offers the resources of a large district with a small-town feel,” said Armstrong.
