Q&A with Owasso swim team captain Sam Suppes – Presented by J-P Hogan Insurance

VYPE: How did you get into swimming?

Sam Suppes: I got into swimming my freshman year. I don’t really know what got me into it. I had friends that swam but for other schools. I heard an announcement in eighth grade that the swim tryouts were coming up so I decided to join.

VYPE: Along with swimming, what other activities or sports are you involved in?

SS: Along with swimming I’m also in the National Honor Society.

VYPE: What is your proudest school/sports accomplishment?

SS: My proudest moment would have to be making team captain. The feeling of knowing that my team viewed me as a good leader was amazing.

VYPE: What are some of your goals post-high school?

SS: Post high school, I hope that I continue to swim and continue to stay strong and healthy. I hope to go to college and get into a career in the medical field.

VYPE: Which teammate has had the greatest impact on you? Why?

SS: I can’t pick just one teammate that has had the greatest impact on me. Zach Stelzer was a senior my freshman year and he took me under his wing and he pushed me to lift more weight. Run an extra mile. Swim the intervals faster than I was supposed to and I don’t think I could’ve made it this far without him. Alexia Sang is a senior this year and she has been at my side for a very long time. I can’t picture a time in swim without her. She has been a great source of motivation and an amazing gym partner and girlfriend and she has helped me out so much throughout my swim career.

VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher (from any year) and why?

SS: My favorite teacher would have to be Mr. Shuck. He was my sophomore year English teacher. His class was super beneficial and fun to be in. We read things like Oedipus Rex which taught us about morality, and Candide which taught us about satire and logical fallacies. He also taught us how to write a good thesis and an all-around strong essay.

VYPE: Here is your chance to say hello, goodbye or thank you to anyone you wish.SS: I would like to say a special thank you to my family for supporting me. Thank you to coach Casey, coach Jen, and coach Maddie for helping me reach my goals and helping me improve.
